NYE Y2K In JA!

If you are one of those travelers who is looking for complete freedom, a mellow, laid back, off the beaten track kind of celebration...something magical & wonderful with a real taste of that special Jamaican culture, great music & all the flavors of the heart of the Caribbean, a midnight scene that will make you want to join right in...a feeling of friendliness & belonging...an experience...not just another New Year's Eve...you just can't go wrong by coming to Negril, Jamaica for the party of the century...Millennium 2000!

Negril's unique New Year's Eve setting & style is just about all anyone could ask for if you are looking to avoid crowds, traffic, holiday blues, lines, hustle & bustle techno-madness hype, Y2K worries, & rules & regulations.

Imagine a pure white, powder-soft, white sand beach gleaming in the moonlight, stretching for 7 miles & lined with an un-ending array of different kinds of places to celebrate...from local Negril type beach bars lit by the light of huge beachfront bon-fires & many torch-lit, thatch-roofed restaurants serving delicious smelling Jamaican cooked dinners, to the "boom" in the center of the beach at Alfred's, where the big name reggae artists will be performing all night long & the crowd itself is an incredible entertainment, (even the mountain-top dredlock rastas come down to the beach to "see it all, 'mon") all the way to the world famous all-inclusive hotels at the North end of the beach Negril Beach.

On New Year's Eve, the whole beach will be lined with singles, groups, families & couples all strolling along the beach in the moonlight, which is often so bright you can see your own shadow on the sand. The smells of jasmine & ganja mingle in a heady & unforgettable aroma. There is a cloud of smoke hanging in the very air & the intoxication is contagious. The vibes are mellow & there is a feeling of friendliness & security up & down the beach. You feel as though you belong to this place on this night. People everywhere, of all ages, shapes, sizes, styles greeting each other & wishing "HAPPY NEW YEAR, HAPPY MILLENNIUM!" to one another even though they are complete strangers.

Food & drink are offered everywhere & many private & public parties are going on through the night. This Millennium our hats are off to the Negril Chamber of Commerce & all it's members for sponsoring a "third-world" 1st class fire works display, scheduled to go on at midnight for at least an hour.
People usually center themselves near Alfred's to get the best view & many stand right in the warm midnight water, swaying to the incessant rhythmic beat of the drifting music, to see the fabulous display.

This year is really special & so will your night be
if you are among the lucky ones to be in Negril!

Arthur's Golden Sunset

Looking for just the right spot to satisfy all your Negril dreams and within your budget? Sound too good to be true? Well, we have a great tip for you and one you will want to check out because it is a gem. Just across the road from the center of it all.....Alfred's. Negril's most central location, there's a cozy, well kept, and secure property that long time Negril lovers have known about for many years...Arthur's Golden Sunset.

Arthur's offers the original Negril-style hospitality that has become world famous, but you won't see this spot advertised in the magazines or websites often visited by so many. Most find it after arriving in Negril and do not pass this secret on to others, as they want to keep it for themselves!

Ray & Elaine Arthurs have been dispensing their unique style of Negril vacationing to visitors for over 30 years and they are the experts on the ins & outs of your Negril vacation. This family invented Negril style tourist accommodations and are still leaders in the Negril community. They know the entire history of the development of Negril & are happy to share their memories & stories about all of it for their guests......just ask!

Ray & Elaine have a lickle cottage colony in the most central location where you can walk to all Negril's most interesting attractions. There are 1 & 2 bedroom cottages with kitchens and this family run spot will bend over backwards to make your stay peaceful, restful and well looked after.

If you want genuine Jamaican home cooking, laundry, babysitting or almost anything else, they are the folks to talk to. They have intimate knowledge of the country areas surrounding Negril and will be glad to arrange shopping trips, country tours, day trips or any other activities you may want to try in Negril or to any place in Jamaica and are generally a wonderful source of off-the-beaten-track places to see and explore.

Their rentals are very clean, comfortable, well kept and secure and the hospitality can't be beat. With a friendly and helpful full time staff to see to the needs of every guest, all this at rates which are more than reasonable, Golden Sunset is a welcome change of pace and price from the big beachfront hotels.Their lickle hideaway will become your private spot for relaxing after a day out on the beach and the view of the Great Morass and the mountains behind Negril is breezy and cool.

The Negril Yoga Centre

The little bells on the gate at the Negril Yoga Centre tinkle as you walk into the garden, just off the main road across from Coral Seas Beach Hotel......you enter & are welcomed by the hostess who leads you to an outdoor table with benches, right in
the gardens.

The food has been ordered in advance , by phone .....or you can simply walk in & give your order. The night we went we had arranged for the Vegetarian Indian Feast dinner at a very reasonable fixed price for 5 courses plus desert & beverage. The service is informal, friendly, & your advance order allows the staff to prepare well ahead & have the first course awaiting your arrival.

We started our feast with an appetizer of sweet & sour cucumber salad with onions & yogurt. Then, a lovely drink of rice water, lime & honey, called "lassie" was presented. The curried vegetables, brown rice & braised carrots were served next, & were gone shortly as they were all delicious, & very satisfying. The Indian seasonings were a wonderful change of pace from the traditional Jamaican fare we usually eat in Negril & the setting was peaceful & quiet allowing us to have a relaxed conversation with our lovely hostess, Miss Raquel who is the creative force & planner behind the good food & extensive vegetarian menus served at her Yoga Centre Restaurant.
Dessert was a honey flavored home made ice-cream & was the perfect end to a great meal....we will be back soon !!

We give 5 stars to this dining experience as it was lovely & fairly priced. For something unusual & delicious we highly recommend dining here.

Take a look for yourself...
